Linnaeus is considered the father of taxonomy with his method of naming species, but in those days they thought that all organisms were created by God, quickly, and had no relationship to each other. Thus Linnaeus could classify insects and reptiles together as they had plates on the outside of their bodies. Today, we know from the fossil record, DNA analysis, and other tools, that organisms are related to each other through common descent. Modern classification systems show the position of species in relation to other species and who is more or less related.
