Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of how information, e.g., concerning perception, language, reasoning, and emotion, is represented and transformed in the brain. It consists of multiple research disciplines, including psychology, artificial intelligence, philosophy, neuroscience, learning sciences, linguistics, anthropology, sociology, and education. It spans many levels of analysis, from low-level learning and decision mechanisms to high-level logic and planning; from neural circuitry to modular brain organization. The term cognitive science was coined by Christopher Longuet-Higgins in his 1973 commentary on the Lighthill report, which concerned the then-current state of Artificial Intelligence research. In the same decade, the journal Cognitive Science and the Cognitive Science Society were founded.

Would a major in Cognitive Science prepare you for Med School if you wanted to become a neurosurgeon?
Q. I am interested in majoring in Cognitive Science with a concentration on Neuroscience at UCSD. I was wondering if this would be a pre-med program? I am still not exactly sure how Pre-Med Programs work, so excuse me if that does not make sense. I am interested in becoming a neurosurgeon or something in neurology, but definitely a MD. What other majors would be an option in neurosurgery? Thank you-Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!

A. I'm somewhat on the same path as you are; I'm going to be a freshman next year with a major in neurobiology. All you have to do to be pre-med is to fulfill the pre-med requirements. Even at a large school like UCSD, you should be able to get in touch with a pre-med counselor who can help you with fulfilling the required classes. You could really be any major as long as you fulfill the required classes, keep your GPA high, and prepare well for the MCATs. In fact, make sure that your major really is something in which you are interested because that is the best way to keep your GPA up. I'd advise also trying to get field experience working in a hospital or a clinic.

is cognitive science mostly computer programming and artificial intelligence related?
Q. or is it more psychology? or can you go in either direction?

A. Cognitive science is mostly about understanding how the brain works. It uses tools like the functional MRI to observe which areas of the brain are active during various kinds of mental processes. It studies brains damaged by injury and disease. When properly done, psychology uses the results of cognitive science as a basis of its own research and discipline. Computer programming is only slightly related, and AI is unrelated.
