Epistemology (from Greek ἐπιστήμη - episteme-, "knowledge, science" + λόγος, "logos") or theory of knowledge is the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature and scope (limitations) of knowledge. It addresses the questions:

  • What is knowledge?
  • How is knowledge acquired?
  • What do people know?
  • How do we know what we know?

Much of the debate in this field has focused on analyzing the nature of knowledge and how it relates to similar notions such as truth, belief, and justification. It also deals with the means of production of knowledge, as well as skepticism about different knowledge claims.

The term was introduced into English by the Scottish philosopher James Frederick Ferrier (1808–1864).

In epistemology is it really possible to refute skepticism without begging the question?
Q. Does it matter if it isn't? Is the best answer to take a pragmatic approach and simply refute skepticism through its lack of practical use while admitting that there are limitations to human reason? While I'm at it- any book recommendations on the subject? How about a good introduction to metaphysics? You might be able to tell I'm new to this whole field! When I say skepticism I am referring to radical skepticism, the idea that knowledge is impossible, not to the useful type of skepticism.

A. You can't refute active skepticism without falling to the begging the question fallacy. Because you must ask yourself, "why not be skeptical?", which is a skeptical response...

Can you recommend a book on EPISTEMOLOGY?
Q. Preferably one that is a broad survey of the field, is reasonably recent, and isn't ignorant of quantum theory and neuroscience.

Tell me about the epistemology of the universe in Serenity.?
Q. I had to think that theres more than just science, theres a phsycic as well. so what do you guys think? Any good answers?

A. Are you not assuming that there is no way to account for psychic powers via science. If these powers exist can't we assume that they will operate under physical laws, either known or unknown. In other words, to us an animal that uses radar to "see" the world before science had discovered radar would seem magically. That being said, i think, the Serenity Universe leaves open the possibility of gaining knowledge by some mystical method. it was after all written and created by the man who created the Buffy universe.

Epistemology from the Greek words episteme (knowledge) and logos (word/speech) is the branch of philosophy that deals with the nature, origin and scope of knowledge.

  • "Thinking is another attribute of the soul; and here I discover what properly belongs to myself. This alone is inseparable from me. I am--I exist: this is certain"
  • "Cogito, ergo sum." (trans.: "I think, therefore I am.")
  • "The universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose."
  • "The genius of culture is to create an ontological system so compelling that what is inside and outside of a person are viewed as of a piece, no seams and patches noticable."
    • Richard Shweder, "Cultural psyschology-What is it?" Cultural Psychology (1990)
  • "Wisdom is knowing how little we know."
  • "The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing."
  • "True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world around us."
  • "To find yourself, think for yourself."
  • "I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance."
