Can I spend cash and spend my pell grant check in another state?
Q. So I recently moved from Texas to California. Before moving, I received my financial aid refund check and took it with me. Can I use that money if I don't go to school in TX anymore? Would it be illegal to use it? I applied for financial aid in TX during fall 2007. Thank you :)

A. And it took you that long to get it? Wow, if you received it because your tuition and books were already paid for and finished all your classes without dropping out then yes. It doesn't matter where you spend it. It was for a semester that you or someone else already paid for.

A. It all depends on the school. Some schools disburse funds up to a week before the semester for continuing students; new students must wait until the drop/add period is over. I would check your schools financial aid website or the bursar's office website to see if they have this information posted for you. If not, give them a call. While they can't normally give detailed information over the phone, they can give you an idea of when the funds will be disbursed and how you will receive your refund (check, direct deposit, etc.). Hope this helps. :)

A. Dear Glitter: See IRS Pub 970. The Pell grant is tax free to the extent it is used for "Qualified Educational Expenses". See reporting requirement (if required) in Pub 970. This advice was prepared based on our understanding of the tax law in effect at the time it was written as it applies to the facts that you provided. Click on my profile to read more. Question about Pell Grant?
Q. My school sent me a check for a Pell Grant refund on money that was not used. I get an email a week after the checks have been sent out with them telling me that they sent me the wrong amount. Tell told me that I could either bring in the check that they sent me or I will owe them money. Does the school have the right to this? I have already spent most of the money that they sent me. They said that on my application that I said I have 3 people living with me. Which I do live with my parents. Anyways I had to make a couple of corrections before the quarter started and I answered questions to the Financial Aid office and now my household size in there eyes is just me. A. You need to repay the money. Yes, they have the right to do this. You are considered "Independent" and if you read the fafsa instructions carefully you would have discovered you can not count your parents in your household number (even if you live with them) as an independent student. What I don't understand is how the websites self checks didn't catch this. You must have had SEVERAL questions that you answered incorrectly on the fafsa to get this to go though. Always read the questions carefully to avoid this costly mistake and call someone if you don't understand. If you do not repay the money they will put a hold on your transcript and will not allow you to enroll in any other classes at the school and you will not be able to… [cont.]

A. pell grants are a form of federal financial aid that never has to be paid back. It is strictly based on your income. The amount they have posted on your account is probably the amount allowed. You should call your financial aid office to find out about your refund they should be able to tell you by now.

When do i get my refund check?
Q. I will be attending lemoyne owen college here in memphis in on Aug 24th and i was wondering when do they typically disburse the refund checks? I already filled out the fasfa and see that i am eligible for the pell grant up to 5350 and plans to take out loans to cover the rest.

A. You will need to call your school's financial aid office to find out the exact date that financial aid awards are disbursed. The government requires that they are disbursed no SOONER than 10 days before classes begin, but that doesn't mean schools have to do it that early. Your school receives the financial aid money, deducts what they need to pay for your direct bills (tuition, meal plan, etc.), and if you have leftover money, then that's what you receive in the form of a refund check. It can take several days after your school's disbursement date for you to be given a refund check.

financial aid (PELL grant) taken away?
Q. I already got my refund check last week... but when I looked at my billing statement today, it says pell grant has been taken away.. Meaning I owe them money now. This is for the 07-08 year. Nothing has changed in terms of financial need, and I didn't change classes or anything. I did get married last week though. Has this something to do with it? I don't think it does since fafsa was filed for the 07-08 years with my moms information... What do you think is happening? I already contacted the school and I'm waiting on my answer. But until then, can anybody give me some information?

A. You could have lost your Pell for many reasons. First, you may need to submit something to your school. If something is missing from your file, they can take away your aid until you submit what they want. You may have been given Pell in error. Is your EFC above $4000? If so, you aren't eligible for Pell. Did you get Pell at another school this year? Your school may have found out that you already got maximum Pell. There could be many more reasons, some of which may be errors. I am sure it is not because you got married (unless you went and changed your 07-08 FAFSA to say married). You are not supposed to update your FAFSA due to a change in marital status. Marital status is effective the day you first file your FAFSA and… [cont.]

Q. also do you get a refund check and how often
Asked by serious70 - Thu Sep 18 23:56:58 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You will get what is called an "Award Letter" from your college that will give you exact amounts and instruct you what to do to accept them. Your school will get the Pell grant and use it to pay for all or a portion of your tuition, fees, etc. Schools will only send you a refund check if your Pell (and other aid if you get any) is more than your tuition and fees etc. Some get a pell, but not enough to cover everything. You will have to compare your award letter to your bill to determine if you will get any if they are not together on the same piece of paper. Schools usually give out refunds a few weeks after school has started each semester.. but sometimes it can be much later if you applied after the schools priority deadline. (Many… [cont.]

Do State grants give refunds?
Q. I was told by a friend state grants dont give refund checks only federal (Pell) grants do, Is that true? My school states they take money for tuition from my Pell first then from my state grant. If I have 1,000 left over after tuition and fees will they send me a check for books? I think it would be unfair of them to not give that to me and cause me to take loans for books. State:Indiana Suba: school never said I get a refund, 1,000 is what i estimate I'll have left after tuition. Bauer: thx for website, it says State grant is only for tuition and fees..does that mean Not for books?
Asked by 4U2NV - Tue Jul 14 14:22:31 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Typically all aid will apply to your student account and tuition and fees will be taken out. Your school will typically then cut you a check for any amount leftover after tuition and fees to be used for books, living expenses etc. Scholarships can have criteria that says to only apply to tuition and fees or send the money back to the donor. Generally grants are not set up that way. You can check your state's Higher Education Coordinating Board to get more specific information.

Fafsa student refund help?
Q. I was awarded around 5200 total pell grant for one year, half goes to my fall, and the other half to my spring semester. So that leaves around 2600 per semester. But for some reason this 2600 was spilt into two parts for fall, 1300. I then saw that the status of one 1300 was pending until october 30, and the other half was used to pay for my tuition fees. So my school sent me 600 dollars that was left from deducting my tuition from the 1300, and the other 1300 says "scheduled distribution October 30". What will happen with this money once its distributed? I already got a refund check of 620$?!?! But I still have pell grant money that is pending for October 30. Received Pell Grant of $5350 what amount should I get reimbursed?
Q. Our Daughter attended Community College for 12 hours last semester, 19 hours this Spring Semester. We did not get the Fafsa done until November 2009. We received notice from college we would receive $5350 Pell Grant. We paid by credit card for last Semester (Fall) $1082, then paid Spring 2010 $1650. This means that college received Pell Grant and our credit card payments(Total $8082) (we are still paying on credit card ) They sent a check to our daughter for $2600 today. Should we not receive the full Pell Grant back as we already paid for tuition? College won't talk to me because our Daughter is over 18!!! But we are still liable for expenses until she is 24! A. First, YOU are not liable for her tuition at all. If you don't want to pay for her college, you don't have to. There is no law that says you are liable. Yes, your income is used to determine HER financial aid eligibility, but again, this does not mean you have to pay for it. As a matter of fact (since she qualified for the PELL grant) that shows that you CAN"T pay for it. Hence why SHE got the pell grant. This puts you in a situation. As I'm sure you figured out, the PELL grant is issued to her. In her name. This means if she doesn't want to give it to you to pay off the credit card she doesn't have to. (Hopefully your daughter is a better person that to do that to you, although she is not obligated to). Also be aware that YOU… [cont.]

Will I get less money back on my tax return because of a pell grant?
Q. ok, i asked a question similar to this earlier but didnt get the answer i was looking for.. anyhow, I am going to school online...i was eligible for a pell grant for this semester of $2300... Actually, it was a lil over $4000 but after it paid for my books and schooling expenses, I got the refund of $2300 for living expenses. When I report that to my taxes, will it effect them ? as in me not getting what I normally would get back?.. Last year we got a lil over $5000 back because we have 2 children and my hubby only made $14,500 that year...I am just curious if my tax check will be about the same or will I lose money because of that pell grant? ..I also took out a subsidized loan.
Asked by I my irish twins! - Tue Nov 11 01:32:07 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Was the pell grant for a school year or just one semester. If for a full year, next semester's tuition can also be applied against the grant before any of it is taxable. All sorts of factors will come into play in determining if this years refund will be more or less than last year. But usually, higher income causes more in tax, and thus a lower refund. Though, if everything else is the same as last year, the extra $2300 won't make a huge difference in your taxes.

Federal Aid Refund and Applying for NAFSA?
Q. Ok, I applied for federal loans for summer 08 which was the 07 aid year. My loans got disbursed and I got a big refund check from what I didn't spend at school. I had no idea I was going to get a check. Since I have so much money I won't need to apply for aid next year since I am only taking 2 classes per semester. I am doing pre-nursing classes and this will probably cover that. I will need to apply for aid once I get accepted into nursing school a few years down the road. My question is that I thought I read somewhere that you can't apply for a student loan if you don't do it every year?? Since I probably won't need it for the 08-09 year, will I not be able to get a student loan when I need it 3-4 years from now?? I am confused. I am not… [cont.]

A. No you will not have to give it back... chances are you will not have any left over... so spend wisely The money will be used by your school first to pay for your classes and any living expenses you may have on campus. Then you will have to purchase your books. The remainder of the money (your grant is also divided by semesters so you do not get the full allotment all at once) will be given to you in the form of a check. The remainder is to pay for supplies and is to be spent on school... however, you can spend it anyway you want... but the best thing to do is put it in a bank account in case an unexpected expense arises. Also, if you drop classes before a certain date, you will have to give some of it back - usually that is done… [cont.]
