Re: pell grant refund from community college?
Q. I was wanting to know if you are a first time college student. I have applied for student loans and pell grant. My student account shows refund of 377.00 for pell grant as of 9/2/2010. But I was told that I have to wait 30 days for my student loan. Will my student loans and pell grant be released supposedly on Sept. 21 or will i receive what is left of my pell of 377.00 first then later the student loans will follow. My last community college that I attended I got a pell grant check but i applied for loans and it came later. Does this normally happen or do i just wait 30 days also for pell grant refund. Started classes Sept. 23

Can I spend cash and spend my pell grant check in another state?
Q. So I recently moved from Texas to California. Before moving, I received my financial aid refund check and took it with me. Can I use that money if I don't go to school in TX anymore? Would it be illegal to use it? I applied for financial aid in TX during fall 2007. Thank you :)

A. And it took you that long to get it? Wow, if you received it because your tuition and books were already paid for and finished all your classes without dropping out then yes. It doesn't matter where you spend it. It was for a semester that you or someone else already paid for.

Can I get a refund of student loans if pell grant covers full tuition?
Q. Example: Tuition & fees for semester is 1500. I receive a pell grant for 2250 for the semester. I also was awarded federal stafford loans for 6250 for the semester. My question is will i get a refund check for the 6250 (+ the 750 leftover from the pell grant) even though none of the loan proceeds actually went to tuition? Or does that not matter? I.E. should I expect to receive a refund check of 6250 for loan refund and 750 for pell grant refund?

Will a scholarship mess up my pell grant?
Q. I'm sure the answer will probably be different depending on the college/university involved. I was recently rewarded a scholarship, I haven't accepted it yet and I didn't want to go into the financial aid office with a stupid question. Will a scholarship make my pell grant refund check be less? Will I get one at all? I'll have to use my grant for my books, will it be adjust according to the amount I used towards books or will it be the entire amount back? And if by the slim chance someone answers this from the school I go to...it's Shelton State. Any helpful answer will be welcomed!

Do I keep my Pell Grant Refund?
Q. I'm starting college as a full time student next week and I live in Georgia. I was awarded the HOPE Scholarship for my tuition and also the Pell Grant. I checked my student invoice today because I got a debit card from my college in the mail. It says I have a refund of $2600 this semester. I am curious- Do I get to keep this money to use on other expenses? Are there any limitations? I am a commuter and any gas money would be of great help. Does the money just go back to the state? I am the first to go to college in my family and so we are new to all of this. Thanks for your help!

Question about Pell Grant?
Q. My school sent me a check for a Pell Grant refund on money that was not used. I get an email a week after the checks have been sent out with them telling me that they sent me the wrong amount. Tell told me that I could either bring in the check that they sent me or I will owe them money. Does the school have the right to this? I have already spent most of the money that they sent me. They said that on my application that I said I have 3 people living with me. Which I do live with my parents. Anyways I had to make a couple of corrections before the quarter started and I answered questions to the Financial Aid office and now my household size in there eyes is just me. A. You need to repay the money. Yes, they have the right to do this. You are considered "Independent" and if you read the fafsa instructions carefully you would have discovered you can not count your parents in your household number (even if you live with them) as an independent student. What I don't understand is how the websites self checks didn't catch this. You must have had SEVERAL questions that you answered incorrectly on the fafsa to get this to go though. Always read the questions carefully to avoid this costly mistake and call someone if you don't understand. If you do not repay the money they will put a hold on your transcript and will not allow you to enroll in any other classes at the school and you will not be able to… [cont.]

I never received my pell grant refund?
Q. I enrolled in Summer of 2009 and was awarded a pell grant. I didn't received a refund on the first term. Then for fall I got almost 1000 back in checks. Now supposedly the spring term checks were sent out february 18th but I didn't receive anything just like in the summer. On the NSLDS.ed.gov site you can log in and see how much aid was dispursed, how much you were awarded and what has yet to be dispursed. For Summer is says they owe me like 1600 dollars that was never dispursed. So am I just like missing money here or what?

Q. I have already been awarded my aid and i`m looking at my account summary and it`s telling me my pell grant is a certain a amount and i have a certain amount to spend on books.Does that amount tell me how much i`m getting back in my refund check or not? Is a pell grant and fincial aid too diffrent monies or the same?

A. pell grants are a form of federal financial aid that never has to be paid back. It is strictly based on your income. The amount they have posted on your account is probably the amount allowed. You should call your financial aid office to find out about your refund they should be able to tell you by now.

What am I allowed to do with a financial aid refund check?
Q. I am getting a $1500 refund check from government financial aid, scholarships, etc. My question is what can I do with it? Does it solely have to be used for educational purposes for myself? I am thinking about paying off one of my friend's student loans because he needs the money more than I do. Is this okay? Could I get in trouble for this if anyone found out? Additional Details: This refund does NOT come from loans or anything else that needs to be repaid. It is from a Pell grant, an Academic Competitiveness Grant, and a 21st Century Scholarship. If I don't have anything else to do with it, why shouldn't I be able to give it to someone in need?

A. If what your saying is...you got financial aid from the government, they payed your tuition and books ect. then you had some left over, they cut you a check for what was left over...then yes you can do whatever you want with it. cash the check, or put it in your bank, then do whatever you want with it. Technically what its for is to help w/ your other expenses such as gas to and from school, housing ect. so you bought that stuff and now they are paying you some of it back. you wont get in trouble if you spend it. i get finacial aid too and thats exactly what they told me, to do whatever i want with it, and i have been for 2 years and no one cares. its perfectly legal and your not breaking any rules. Think of it as free money...bonus!

Q. I will be attending lemoyne owen college here in memphis in on Aug 24th and i was wondering when do they typically disburse the refund checks? I already filled out the fasfa and see that i am eligible for the pell grant up to 5350 and plans to take out loans to cover the rest.
Asked by Whittney21 - Wed Jul 1 15:19:22 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You will need to call your school's financial aid office to find out the exact date that financial aid awards are disbursed. The government requires that they are disbursed no SOONER than 10 days before classes begin, but that doesn't mean schools have to do it that early. Your school receives the financial aid money, deducts what they need to pay for your direct bills (tuition, meal plan, etc.), and if you have leftover money, then that's what you receive in the form of a refund check. It can take several days after your school's disbursement date for you to be given a refund check.

I'm below the poverty level. Why is my EFC (532) so high?
Q. My husband made $10,400 last year and I made about $300. We applied for the FASFA as full-time students, yet they deducted $532-ish dollars from both of our Pell Grants. From my research, we are under the poverty level. I did notice one section that said to put income. I had received my second Pell Grant refund check and we hadn't gone grocery shopping or paid bills yet when we were filling out our forms. We put $932-ish as how much we had in hand. From what I understood, the money we had in hand wouldn't count to what we would get. We have no car, no investments, no house. At that time we had around $950 total. I added that to the section where it asked how much money we had at the moment. And last year I got a full Pell Grant… [cont.]

A. An EFC of 532 is not high at all; it is actually extremely LOW! The maximum EFC is 999. Not sure why they would subtract anything from your Pell Grant. The amount you get is set by law. The 532 EFC is just the index for determining what that Pell amount should be. Yes, money you have on hand is included in the calculation to determine your EFC. But $950 likely made no difference at all in your EFC because your income was so low! The only way to find out for 100% certain what happened is to talk to someone in the financial aid office at your school.

Pell Grant Question??
Q. I have the pell grant which pays for all of my classes and books. If I were to drop a class when the school still gives a 100% refund on money, would that affect my pell grant? Would the money just go back to the government or would I get a refund check THEN get a bill later? And if so, would that affect my other classes that im enrolled in?

financial aid refund check?
Q. i have a pell grant and my school says that in order to get my refund check i have attended six credits worth of classes. what exactly does that mean.
Asked by ? - Fri Aug 14 20:19:50 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Different types of classes are different credits. Most main classes like english, psychology, math, etc. are usually a three credit class. some extra classes like electives or the lesser important classes are one credit. have a schedule that contains at least six credits. usually this means you need to sign up for at least two main classes. check with the college you are going to and see how many credits the classes you are interested in and just make sure they add up to at least six so you can use the financial aid to the fullest.

Can your school take your Federal Pell Grant?
Q. I am a sophomore in college and last year, I got $1000 per semester from my Pell Grant, and all of that money came back to me in a refund check because I had a full academic scholarship that covered everything. With that money, I was able to pay for all of my expenses for the year. This year, however, I still have the exact same full academic scholarship, yet for some reason they lowered the scholarship and "absorbed" my Pell Grant, leaving me with no other way to pay for the rest of my expenses this year. It really sucks because I was approved for an even higher amount this year due to my low family income, and the school assured me that I would have that money to be able to support myself, only to find out that I now have no money at… [cont.]

A. You need to sit down with your financial aid adviser and don't leave until you understand fully what has happened. They need to give you a full disclosure of where the funds went. If you got the same scholarship, where did that money go? You have a right to these answers and work your way up the departmental ladder all they way up to the dean until you do understand.

financial aid (PELL grant) taken away?
Q. I already got my refund check last week... but when I looked at my billing statement today, it says pell grant has been taken away.. Meaning I owe them money now. This is for the 07-08 year. Nothing has changed in terms of financial need, and I didn't change classes or anything. I did get married last week though. Has this something to do with it? I don't think it does since fafsa was filed for the 07-08 years with my moms information... What do you think is happening? I already contacted the school and I'm waiting on my answer. But until then, can anybody give me some information?
Asked by kat - Tue Feb 19 13:38:14 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You could have lost your Pell for many reasons. First, you may need to submit something to your school. If something is missing from your file, they can take away your aid until you submit what they want. You may have been given Pell in error. Is your EFC above $4000? If so, you aren't eligible for Pell. Did you get Pell at another school this year? Your school may have found out that you already got maximum Pell. There could be many more reasons, some of which may be errors. I am sure it is not because you got married (unless you went and changed your 07-08 FAFSA to say married). You are not supposed to update your FAFSA due to a change in marital status. Marital status is effective the day you first file your FAFSA and… [cont.]

Asked by serious70 - Thu Sep 18 23:56:58 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You will get what is called an "Award Letter" from your college that will give you exact amounts and instruct you what to do to accept them. Your school will get the Pell grant and use it to pay for all or a portion of your tuition, fees, etc. Schools will only send you a refund check if your Pell (and other aid if you get any) is more than your tuition and fees etc. Some get a pell, but not enough to cover everything. You will have to compare your award letter to your bill to determine if you will get any if they are not together on the same piece of paper. Schools usually give out refunds a few weeks after school has started each semester.. but sometimes it can be much later if you applied after the schools priority deadline. (Many… [cont.]
