If I plan to record for a long time,is "SP" or "SLP" better?
Q. Is it better to record in "SP" mode or "SLP" mode if I intend to record for a long period of time?
Asked by kevin p - Sun Mar 4 13:41:41 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Nothing is free, including recording time. SLP is longer but the quality is WAY worse. If you plan to keep the recording for a long time, use SP, If you are going to erase it after you watch it, then SLP is OK.

Need help with blank dvd r disks?
Q. Am needing help, i have some blank Dvd r fujifilm disks which says can film up to 6 hrs in slp mode.Need to know how can i set the disk speed to slp mode? any help appreciated, thnks.
Asked by poldaroi21 - Mon Feb 2 20:24:24 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Do yourself a favor and avoid avoid avoid slp mode at all cost. This is terrible quality, and often results in sporadic sound loss. A single layer DVD disk with decent quality should be about one hour, and a double layer DVD disk should hold about 2 hours. Stick to SP [Standard Play] for your best quality.

vhs wear and tear?
Q. Im planning very soon to record some shows on my dvr to vhs to make room for more shows and I was planning on recording in SP mode for best qaulity but i was wondering if this will cause the heads to wear out faster than it would in SLP mode? or do they both wear on the vcr heads the same? and my other question is if u record alot of shows does that wear out the vcr quicker than it would just watching vhs tapes? I would think it would but im not sure! anyway thanks 4 the info! :)

A. I wouldn't worry about wear on the VCR machine play/record head, it uses a rotating head which implements a helical scan that minimizes wear as long as the tapes are kept clean. SP, SLP & EP only regard the speed at which the tape is implemented to record the image, hence a slower speed records more information relating to better quality but shorter run times. What is most important about media recorded on VHS is to keep the tapes in cases, in a low humidity environment and away from magnetic fields (like speakers), media kept in pristine condition can last 40 years or more.

i want burn a dvd in ep (extended play) sp or slp which dvd burning software should i get?
Q. i want record a movie from my computer on to a dvd but my program does not give me the option to change the video mode, so i cant burn files longer than 60 minutes ive tied several burners but none of them seem to help.

A. I don't believe DVD's have any extended play option. It only exists on VCR's by slowing the tape down and reducing the quality of the tape. I don't think it's possible to slow down the DVD drive.

Searching For Blank DVD's?
Q. I would like to know if any company makes blank DVD's or DVD+RW's that hold more than 6 hours of material in SLP recording mode? I have seen pre-recorded discs with up to 10 hours on them. Are these discs available blank and to the public? What do i look for when searching for the info that will tell me the disc can hold that much material? Thanks

Does the DVD speed make a difference when backing up low quality television recordings from videotape?
Q. I have a bunch of VHS video tapes containing many episodes of a difficult to find TV show. They were recorded in SLP (low quality) mode although they look pretty good. I want to back all of them up on DVDs with my DVD recorder. If I use the lowest quality (longest record time) setting on the DVD recorder, will the quality of the show decrease even more than it already is? In order to maintain the current quality of the show as it is now on the tapes, will I need to use the highest quality record setting on the DVD recorder? Thanks,

A. It depends quite a bit on your DVD recorder. The top quality is certainly overkill, even for SP tapes. VHS typically demonstrates about 1/4 the effective resolution of well authored DVDs. But when you add more compression, there can be issues. A big one with VHS recording is noise -- there's analog noise on any VHS tape.. people tend to ignore it, simply because they've trained themselves to ignore it, watching so much TV. The DVD recorder doesn't know the difference, necessarily, between noise and picture, so it can work very hard to keep the noise in there, at the expense of video quality. My advice -- find one of your tapes, hopefully not your best one, and just do it... make that DVD at the lowest rate. Then watch it, carefully.… [cont.]

I am thinking about replacing my vcr with a dvd recorder, but have a question...?
Q. I see that most dvd-r's and rw's hold about 120 minutes of recorded data. Are there dvd'r's that hold more time than that? I am used to recording about 6 or 8 hours worth of tv shows onto one vhs tape, and need to know the max amount of hours that I can record onto a dvd. Are there different speed modes on the dvd recorders like there are on vcr's? (SP, SLP)
Asked by Lisa W - Fri Nov 24 03:51:09 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, my DVD recorder has 4 different settings for the typical 4.7 GB blank DVD: 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours or 6 hours.
