What is the mode for recording shows on a Toshiba DVD player/recorder and play it on a computer DVD player?

If I plan to record for a long time,is "SP" or "SLP" better?
Q. Is it better to record in "SP" mode or "SLP" mode if I intend to record for a long period of time?

A. Nothing is free, including recording time. SLP is longer but the quality is WAY worse. If you plan to keep the recording for a long time, use SP, If you are going to erase it after you watch it, then SLP is OK.

SP vs SLP?
Q. I have a VCR and I want to tape something. (We cannot afford TiVo s or anything) so I rely on tapes. Well we bought 6 hour tapes, but it says it is only 2 hrs normal and is 6 hours in SLP mode. What is this? My VCR also has this mode but I have always used the SP mode (default). Is there any difference and if so what would be different if I taped it in SLP mode?

A. SP is standard play which means it uses the most tape but you get the best quality. LP or EP is long play or extended play - should get about 4 hours out of one 6 hour tape. There will be some loss of video quality in this mode. SLP or super long play slows the tape down the most as it is recording which allows you to get the full 6 hours onto the tape. You should notice a loss in the quality for video playback but if you don't mind that this is fine. I used to record a lot of the kids movies and shows this way as it cuts down on the number of tapes I had to buy. On your remote control for your vcr you should see a sp/ep/slp (or some combo of those listed) that will allow you to chose the speed on playback. When you set your VCR to do… [cont.]

A. Do yourself a favor and avoid avoid avoid slp mode at all cost. This is terrible quality, and often results in sporadic sound loss. A single layer DVD disk with decent quality should be about one hour, and a double layer DVD disk should hold about 2 hours. Stick to SP [Standard Play] for your best quality.

Is there any way to fix crinkled VHS tapes and/or restore sound dropouts?
Q. Basically a previous VCR of mine was starting to clunk out and ridged certain tapes a bit. Is there any way to "straighten/flatten" that part of the ribbon out so that it plays smoothly or restores the recorded track making it louder again? I think the crinkle on those portions of the tapes is what's causing the sound dropouts (which is even worse if it was recorded in SLP mode, since it sometimes "jumps") because the smooth part is perfect. anil - thanks but that's what I'm trying to do lol. I just need to make it play good once so I can "save" it.

Questions about DVD R playback?
Q. This will be two questions in one. A.) I finally figured out how to make a DVD R on my one DVD player and thus have officially ended the VHS tape phase of my life. I own a Toshiba DVD Video Recorder/ Video Cassette Recorder. (D-VR600) I just put in a blank disc and press record on XP mode (SLP gave me a grainy picture). The problem is, when you put the disc in another player, the player will simply say READING for about 3 minutes and then it will say incorrect disc, but they do play in the machine I recorded them on , my friend said you have to "Finish" the recording somehow by doing something with the remote but I don't know what it is and the manual is useless, I can't even figure out how to do timer recordings on it, I have to be… [cont.]

A. Stand-alone DVD recorders allow you to put several programs on one DVD. Depending on the mode you have 2 or 4 or 6 hours of record time, so if you could put up with the grainy pictures you could record half an hour now, an hour tomorrow, etc., until the disk was full. But to do this, the recorder has to record in a different format from how a DVD player plays. So there is a command somewhere to -finalize- a disk. After you finalize it, you can't record any more to it, but it will play on a standard DVD player. Look in your manual, and if you don't have one, look on Toshiba's website and I bet you can download it there. The same thing could be happening with the DVRs you burn on your computer. I don't know. There's obviously some… [cont.]

I am thinking about replacing my vcr with a dvd recorder, but have a question...?
Q. I see that most dvd-r's and rw's hold about 120 minutes of recorded data. Are there dvd'r's that hold more time than that? I am used to recording about 6 or 8 hours worth of tv shows onto one vhs tape, and need to know the max amount of hours that I can record onto a dvd. Are there different speed modes on the dvd recorders like there are on vcr's? (SP, SLP)
Asked by Lisa W - Fri Nov 24 03:51:09 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, my DVD recorder has 4 different settings for the typical 4.7 GB blank DVD: 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours or 6 hours.

About the Sony Handycam DCR-SR42 camcorder...?
Q. 1) Does it have a flash option for taking pictures? 2) How do I get to the scene selection mode? 3) How do I change speeds (SP, LP, SLP)? Can I do so while recording? 4) How long does it take to recharge the smaller battery? How much recording time does it have? (The manual says 125 min, but I'm not sure which battery it's referring to. I also heard recording time is 45 min. Is it?) 5) How long does it take to recharge the larger kind of battery? How much recording time does it have? (I heard recording time is 6 hrs. If that's the case, then why, after the camcorder finished recharging, it only said that 225 min were available in battery life?)
