SWOT analysis is a strategic planning method used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business venture. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. The technique is credited to Albert Humphrey, who led a convention at Stanford University in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune 500 companies.

A SWOT analysis must first start with defining a desired end state or objective. A SWOT analysis may be incorporated into the strategic planning model. Strategic Planning, has been the subject of much research.

  • Strengths: attributes of the person or company that are helpful to achieving the objective(s).
  • Weaknesses: attributes of the person or company that are harmful to achieving the objective(s).
  • Opportunities: external conditions that are helpful to achieving the objective(s).
  • Threats: external conditions which could do damage to the objective(s).

Identification of SWOTs are essential because subsequent steps in the process of planning for achievement of the selected objective may be derived from the SWOTs.

First, the decision makers have to determine whether the objective is attainable, given the SWOTs. If the objective is NOT attainable a different objective must be selected and the process repeated.

The SWOT analysis is often used in academia to highlight and identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. It is particularly helpful in identifying areas for development.

what are the principles for making a good SWOT ANALYSIS?
Q. I am trying to make a SWOT analysis for a PR firm. A business school assignment.

A. Most people when they do a SWOT analysis stop at the statements (eg: Our brand is weak in the market place). A good SWOT analysis takes it further and explores each statement in more detail by asking " so what?". What this does is generate solutions or explores the statement in more detail (eg: weak brand - market ourselves - marketing channels available etc etc etc) After you have done this to exhaustion then: - leverage and use your strengths - improve your weaknesses - take advantage of the opportunities - minimize the THREATS

A. Follow these links to the investor relations section of the "bridgestone corporation Japan" website and download their latest annual report. You should be able to build your own SWOT analysis from the directors report, risk analyses, etc. If you're willing to pay for the information, a yahoo search for "bridgestone corporation" + SWOT will bring up loads of links to market/ industry research analyses available for sale.

A. This is my personal opinion... I think the disadvantage with the SWOT analysis is that a lot of it is subjective, especially when analyzing the Strengths and Weaknesses. What one organization might perceive its strengths or weaknesses to be, another firm might (if they were in the same position) might disagree. Something like low-pricing could be seen as a strength or weakness- that could be down to the person doing the analysis to decide. On the Opportunities and Threats part of the analysis, often some of the most important opportunities or threats may not yet have been spotted by the individual/group doing the analysis. It's very common that an opportunity is only recognized once the timing has passed and it is no longer and… [cont.]
