Universities overseas: How important is it that the University is relatively well known?
Q. I m applying to university this year and am seriously considering sending in applications to several universities overseas. However, the few that I have in mind aren t very well known where I reside, and I m concerned that post graduation this may create some problems for me when the time comes for me to establish a career. So my question to you is: do you think that if I were to attend a more unknown university overseas, would it have much of an impact on me when trying to establish a career in my native country? Thanks for the help and advice!

Does the university of your undergrad make a difference to your medical school application?
Q. I am in the Nanotechnology Engineering program at the University of Waterloo, which is the best engineering program at the best engineering institution in Canada. I am planning to take some of my pre-med courses like Biology and Immunology at my University. Would it make a difference if my university is not that well known for undergraduate studies in sciences? Or does my MCAT score compensate for the quality of my university?
Asked by AcePhoenix - Wed Jun 24 22:23:44 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The university does not matter. It's like you've imagined, the MCAT compensates (or tells) for it all.

My university and relationship status updates are not showing up in news feed on facebook. How to fix?
Q. I've added a new university to my schools and universities on facebook and also updated my relationship status from single to 'in a relationship'... But both are not showing up in my news feed. I've tried playing around with the privacy settings; no use. Any ideas on how to fix this? I want my friends to know where I'm going to for university! Thank you so much!

A. It's all about the privacy settings and also the "which application do you allow to post on your wall" .

What's the difference between University of Bristol and the University of West England Bristol?
Q. This year I will start my degree in the U.K and some people suggested me to apply to Bristol as appears to be a nice city for students. When I was applying through UCAS I selected UWE( university of west of England) and apparently it is totally different from the University of Bristol. I would prefer University of Bristol because is one of the best universities in the universities' ranking of the United Kingdom, EWU seems to have a lower level. EWU has offer me a place in the degree I wish to do. What should I do?

A. My daughter has just done the rounds of university open days and interviews as she will start her degree this October. She has luckily been offered a place at the University of Bristol. The two universities you mention are not even on the same scale. Bristol University is seen as very, very good and is difficult to get into, the other one is way down in the rankings I'm afraid. Don't want to put a damper on your offer, but I'm just being realistic. Without knowing what other offers you have or where you have applied to, it is difficult to judge. If you have no other offers, take this one. If you have offers at higher ranking universities, take one of those. People judge you on where you went, not what you studied I'm afraid.

What university has the most fans and what university makes the most money selling apparel?
Q. So basically, I just want to know statistics on universites to figure out which one has the most fans and I also would like to know which university makes the most money selling university products. I guess what I am trying to find out, and this may be hard to find. Even though it would have to be broken down by states of course, which university has the most fans overall (fan population) and also perhaps some statistics about the overall university incomes. It's sort of a tough question to answer...

What university course will i need to take to become a doctor?
Q. I've been having a little trouble trying to decided what I want to do as a career but have finally made the decision! Doctor :) but I'm unsure which university course I would need to take. I'm thinking of choosing university of glamorgan in South Wales but not sure which course there would the one I needed to take. Also, I'm unsure of the qualifications I would need to have to be accepted. What I A levels would I need? Thanks! I mean medical doctor :p

A. ... you would need to take Medicine. Glamorgan doesn't offer med, generally only the more 'prestigious' universities do, and their entry requirements are very high - a large handful of A grades in 'proper' A levels (Chemistry is a must), a very large handful of A* grades at GCSE, plus a very good personal statement and lots of extra-curricular activities. You would need to take, and do well in, an aptitude test such as BMAT.

What university programs do I need to apply in to become a French and English teacher?
Q. When I'm done university, I want to be able to teach french and english. What I don't understand is what I have to write on my application in order to be able to do that. I am currently in gr. 12, applying for the first time and thinking of applying to Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

A. The requirements for a teacher varies by state. You will need a certain number of subject matter classes as well as prescribed education classes. You will probably not be able to do all three of the things listed above as an undergraduate. Take one language and education classes. Your state may also require that you pass certain tests. You can also contact your own state department of education for specific information./ The certification requirements for your state will also be found below./

What university course is necessary to become an airline pilot?
Q. I am 16 years and old and studying Maths, Physics and Geography at AS in sixth form. I've been wanting to become an airline pilot for a number of years now, I'm aware of the requirements in terms of training I need and eyesight etc, but what university course is best to study if any? It would be great if you could tell me the best universities for that course and entrance requirements also. Thanks in advance. I live in England so a course in England would be preferable.
Asked by Luke H - Tue Jan 13 19:22:44 2009 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments
A. You can get a pilot's license with almost any degree. That said, it is very expensive, and hard to get the flight hours. The two places to consider for college would be Embry-Riddle and the US Air Force Academy (where they will also fix your eyes so you can fly). Embry-Riddle is expensive and the Air Force Academy, while free, gives you a commitment to the Air Force afterwards. Air Force ROTC and OTS is similar to the academy, but the odds of getting a pilot slot aren't as good. If neither of those things work for you, then you can try to get a private pilot license, but it is a lot harder to get hired anywhere. EDIT: Wasn't aware that you were from England when I originally posted. That said, I would presume the best way t do so in… [cont.]

Is the modern University system the most practical way to train professionals like Engineers, Accountants etc?
Q. Universities are expensive. It's an ethical dilemna that we have to go into 150K of debt just to try to obtain the American dream. Universities have a lot of requirements that have little to do with the jobs of accounting and engineering. In the distant (maybe not so distant) past these jobs were trained through free apprenticeships, not university, and you didn't have to start in 6 figures of debt just to try to obtain a middle class job.
Asked by Daniel John - Wed Jan 20 09:55:12 2010 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I think you are correct in that the university system is not the best way to educate many professions including engineering and accounting. In Great Britain, medical doctors are trained for the medical profession right after high school (their equivalent) and omit the courses normally required in a liberal arts education or the first two years of a University in America. If I recall they spend four years in med. school followed by two years of internship and another year or two if they are in a specialty. Therefore, they can be out and practicing medicine after six years or 23 or 24 years old or 25 or 26 with a specialty. I think accountants and engineers should spend 2 years in a school or university and another 2 years as interns… [cont.]

What is the best university to major in Public relations: Boston University or Syracuse university?
Q. Also, do you get the chance to do internships in syracuse university ? Because I know BU is highly recommended for internships. Thanks in advance!
Asked by walz - Wed Oct 28 14:51:04 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There are internships at both universities. I've met Syracuse grads, but I haven't met BU grads yet... but likely that's because I live in PA, not in the North east. BU has a good reputation as well... so you'd probably do well at either. Visit both campuses and get a vibe for the departments. Then go to the one that feels right for you. Let me give you an example, when visiting med schools, my girlfriend visited Johns Hopkins, which is often ranked in the top 5, but she got a feeling it was really cut-throat when she visited there, and chose to go elsewhere for med school. I'm sure she'd of been a successful doctor either way, but she was successful where she went, and really liked her program.

A. Have you checked if your University has Nightlife instead of checking Nightlife for University? If that doesn't work.. I don't know what's wrong, you could have something that is conflicting with each game (if you've dl'd any mods that are for a different SIMS Expansion sometimes an expansion won't work since not all mods work with all expansions).

What is a good university to study website design?
Q. I am doing a diploma in IT at the moment, and I am now looking at university courses for next year. What are some of the good universities for studying website design in the UK? I am looking to do a honours degree or a foundation degree. I am also looking for a university with good night life and student accomodation. Thanks, but I am looking to do a website design degree, not a general computing science degree. I know you can do them at a few places.

A. There are two parts to a website; the graphics and the things that you can do with the site. Two different skill sets and taught quite differently. Some people will claim to be able do both but they require different kinds of brain so it isn't really possible. To study graphic design you will need to go to Art school. For the 'parts that move' you will read Computing at a regular uni. This will give you the skills to create the dynamic part of the website plus teach you many other important areas relating to websites such as security, databases, distributed processing etc.

A. In the US there are state an private universities. State schools are funded mostly by the government. Most money comes from the actual state the school is in and these schools take a majority of kids from their own state. State schools are cheaper than private universities and colleges. Most can not afford the resources that top private schools offer. You are more likely to find very large classes at state schools. Most states have many schools in the state system of varying quality. In California, a huge state, the system is enormous. It has Ucs, it's top schools, CSUs, it's middle tier schools and community colleges. Q. I live in Canada and attend a University (MUN) and I am almost finished my Bachlor of Science.. Biology Major. I know in Canada there is a big difference in College and University. Here.. University takes 4 years plus additional x amount if you're doing graduate but College you go in for 2-3 years and get a trade and a lower paying job! What is the difference in the States? I hear people saying they are going to College even though it's a university!

A. The difference between the words college and university depend very much upon where you live. In many cases, in the US, a college refers to a four year advanced education only, and an institution which does not have the accreditation to offer more than a bachelor s degree. College may also be restricted by its modifiers. For example, a technical college may offer Associate of Arts degrees or certification in certain fields only. A junior college or community college also offers a variety of A.A. degrees and certification programs. Traditionally the term college applied to a part of a university. Large universities may be split into colleges or departments that offer different degrees. The University of California, Berkeley, for instance,… [cont.]

How important is university name in obtaining a job as a professor?
Q. How important is the name recognition or prestige of the university when applying for a job as a professor? Would the university you got your PhD at be more important than the one you got your Masters from?
Asked by gt5879c - Tue Aug 4 09:57:47 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The prestige of the institution(s) you intend can be a factor in the kinds of positions you will be offered (in any field). However, there are generally more important factors for those wanting to teach at the college level, including professional experience, performance as a graduate assistant, recommendations, academic records, and area of specialization within a discipline. Rather than complete a masters first and then begin a PhD program, it is easier, and generally faster, to enroll directly in a PhD program. The institution from which you earn a PhD will generally be viewed as more important than the institution(s) from which you earned prior degrees.

What is the difference between college and university?
Q. No need to really expand. I just know that most people say they went to college when they mean some undergraduate school above hiskool. But then some say university. Whatz the diff? So if I go to UCLA, university of California Los Angeles, did I go to university and if I go to William Mary College did I also go to university?

A. I don't know that there is a huge difference. I know where I live there is a community college--which is only 2years. you can only get your Associates degree there. Honestly, besides Nursing, an associates doesn't lead to much around where I live anyways. I went to a university, which is a 4 year school to get a bachelors degree. It does offer graduate classes, so I am unsure if it has to offer graduate classes to be a university. The way I differentiate is that I see it as they are all colleges but only ones that offer a Bachelors and on (4years +) would be a university.

What has gone wrong with university students that has caused so many to become petty jerks?
Q. I've encountered two types of students: 1. Community college students, whom I found on average to be reasonable people. Just a few are jerks. 2. University students and recent graduates of universities. I am amazed at how they go out of their way to show disrespect, to backstab, to be petty and find fault. Why do I see such a difference between community college students and university students?

What University should I go to for a career as an opthalmologist?
Q. Would it be a primary care or research university? And what major woul be best for that career?

A. If you want to be an ophthalmologist, you have to go through 4 years of medical school. There are quite a few medical schools around the country and most states have at least one. If you are set on becoming an ophthalmologist, you will first need to get into a good medical school. Rankings for medical schools can be found through US News. After that, you will have to apply for a residency program in ophthalmology, which is an additional 4 years. I don't believe there is such a thing as a primary care university, however, many medical schools are part of a larger research university. This doesn't make them better, but it does mean more funding for if you would like to complement your studies with research. Nowadays, many opthalmologists… [cont.]
